The mission of the Worldcoin project is to create the world’s largest identity and financial network, accessible to everyone as a public utility. A critical aspect of this project is developing the essential infrastructure for a future increasingly influenced by AI. The core of the Worldcoin system is World ID, a global identity network that preserves privacy. World ID allows users to verify their human identity online while maintaining privacy through zero-knowledge proofs. This enables individuals to prove they are unique humans to any platform integrating the protocol, including web3 systems, social media sites, and government programs.
World ID aims to facilitate fair token or NFT distributions, protect against bots and sybil attacks on social media, and ensure equitable distribution of limited government resources. Additionally, World ID can support global democratic processes and new governance models, such as quadratic voting, and may eventually lead to AI-funded universal basic income (UBI).
The Worldcoin token (WLD), along with World ID, enables users to participate in governing the Worldcoin protocol. To engage with the protocol, users must download a wallet app that supports World ID creation. They then visit a physical imaging device called the Orb to obtain Orb-verified World ID. The Orb, operated by independent local businesses known as Orb Operators, uses multispectral sensors to verify humanness and uniqueness. All images are promptly deleted on-device by default unless the user consents to Data Custody. Holders of Orb-verified World IDs can claim recurring grants of free WLD tokens, subject to availability. The WLD token functions as a utility token with governance properties.
